The Eastern Cape Condo

The Eastern Cape Condo with a global influence is nestled within the hills of the Toronto Beaches. It is a cozy & breezy take on Mid-Century Modern design that honours the family’s South African heritage. Our objective was to make the space feel cozy, bright, and flexible, to achieve this we carefully selected natural materials and slim lightweight furniture that is authentic to the Mid-century modern movement. Teak, linen & wool are layered throughout the space. These natural materials are used to amplify the calming atmosphere that greets you when you enter the space.

The south-facing condo captures the most breathtaking views of the Toronto skyline and the shores of Lake Ontario. Sheer linen drapes frame the views and add a soft presence in the space while still allowing the natural light and shadows to dance around the bright and airy room. The art in the home is truly priceless. Each piece has great sentimental value. The homeowners were looking to expand their art collection by adding a Canadian piece with muted hues and soft brushstrokes that would emulate a peaceful presence. I am truly honored to have had the opportunity to paint a custom watercolour painting of a misty abstract forest for their home. The piece found its home in the dining room and is framed in three white oak frames. Two gorgeous Afghan Baluch hand-knotted sheep & goat wool rugs define the living and dining areas in this open concept home. A 20th-century South African teak dining set rests on the hand-knotted rug, The dining table expands when needed to accommodate 8 people comfortably   The comfortable chairs were reupholstered in a chevron pattern fabric with navy and natural hues are woven throughout.

Sent off on a mission to find authentic mid-century modern furniture, my client successfully found an original Canadian-made sofa and love seat set made out of teak and had them reupholstered. Pulling inspiration from the Afghan Baluch rugs they found a vibrant blue chenille to bring the furniture back to life! They are now the statement pieces that bring unity into the space. Throw pillows and cushions in neutral hues and textures that rest on the vibrant sofas bring balance and warmth into the space. It was important that all the pieces in the space allowed for the flexibility to move things around and change up the space effortlessly.  This is a place to gather with loved ones and friends and the flexibility to move items around to accommodate different gathering types and sizes is invaluable.
